FEL is designed to help local people understand the choices involved in the energy transition, and to create space for informed, practical conversations about what could happen in their area.

The training itself was very hands-on. After a short introduction, we worked through a series of practical exercises, simulating how a workshop might run in real towns and communities. This included mapping local assets, identifying opportunities, and thinking through how different energy solutions might fit within, and benefit, a community.

One of the most effective elements was the use of large, physical maps. Rather than relying on digital tools, ideas were drawn out and discussed in real time. It’s a simple approach, but it encourages broader participation and helps ground conversations in the reality of a place.

For us, it reinforced the value of this kind of engagement. Workshops like these are not just about awareness. They help identify local priorities, surface concerns early, and connect with people who are motivated to be part of delivering projects.

As Bedfordshire Energy Together, we see this as a strong model for supporting communities across the region. Alongside developing renewable energy projects, there is a real opportunity to work more closely with towns and parishes to explore what the energy transition means locally, and how communities can shape it.

If you’re interested in bringing this kind of workshop to your area, or want to learn more about how community energy can work locally, we’d be keen to hear from you.
